Water balance in plants:
Water balance:Why do plants need water? To plants, water is vital for surviving and being healthy. It helps keep their cells turgid, it is used for photosynthesis, it helps complete efficient gas exchange, it helps the plants get minerals and food, it helps control temperature and also keeps the cytoplasm moist. Without having water, the plants chances of survival significantly drop as water is needed for a number of things in the plant. (Jones, 2015) (Class notes) (Feildtrip to Hamilton Gardens)
How do plants get water?Plants get their water through osmosis. Osmosis is the movement of molecules across a semi-permeable membrane from an area of high concentration to low concentration. The roots absorb the water via osmosis, then travel through the xylem in the stem to the leaves. As water is lost due to transpiration more water replaces it, this is called the transpiration pull.(Jones, 2015)(Class notes,2015)
